Arizona Daily Star, 1959FORT ORD, Calif. -- (Special) -- Private Carlos (Sonny) Valencia last week became only the second soldier on record at Fort Ord to achieve 500 points on the Physical Fitness Test -- and the first soldier to make a perfect score on the revised PT test.
Valencia is a former wrestling star at both Tucson High and the university of Arizona. He was also a well-known football halfback in high school.
In reaching the 500 mark, Pvt. Valencia, a candidate for airborne training, tallied 18 pullups, 60 pushups, 95 squat jumps, 85 situps in two minutes, and ran the 300-yard dash in 44 seconds.
The accomplishment of this feat made him a co-holder of the Fort Ord Physical Fitness Test title with Pvt. Everett B. Evans, who broke the post record in Nov. 1956. Evans, 1955 Ohio State middleweight weight lifting runnerup, set the record with 20 pullups, 54 pushups, 75 squat thrusts in one minute, and 79 situps in two minutes.
Since that time, one other soldier has scored 496 points.
